River Heads Boating Facilities Upgrade

Introduction

Maritime Safety Queensland is progressing plans to upgrade the River Heads boating facilities, including a new floating walkway and pontoon, rock protection, as well as general maintenance work to the existing boat ramp to ensure safer and more efficient access for boaties.

The project will improve facilities at this important gateway to the Great Sandy Strait and K'gari. With the existing floating walkway reaching the end of its service life, the upgrade will provide renewed infrastructure to improve safety, accessibility and functionality for boat ramp users.

About the project

River Heads is an important marine access point for boating activity in the Fraser Coast region, providing access to the Great Sandy Strait, K'gari and surrounding waterways.

The existing floating walkway has experienced ongoing deterioration from age, weather and marine conditions and is reaching the end of its service life. The project will renew key boating infrastructure and support safer and more reliable access for boat ramp users.

The project has been identified as a priority boating infrastructure investment within the Fraser Coast region. The Queensland Recreational Boating Facilities Demand Forecasting Study for the Fraser Coast local government area identified the River Heads boating facility as a Priority 1 recommendation to help address current and future boating demand.

Project features

The concept design includes:

  • replacing the existing floating walkway with a new modern structure
  • new pontoon at the outer end of the new floating walkway
  • extended rock wall protection
  • boat ramp repairs and improvements.

Next steps

Feedback received during consultation will help confirm the concept design meets community needs and priorities before the design is finalised. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2027, weather and marine conditions permitting.

We will update the community when more construction details are available, including timing, the final design and key milestones.
