New 6-knot speed limit for Burrum River Weir 1

A 6-knot speed limit has been introduced at Weir No.1 of the Burrum River, a freshwater catchment area controlled by Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The new speed limit has been introduced due to complaints of speeding vessels potentially endangering other waterway users. The measure will also help reduce erosion along the riverbanks and protect the drinking water catchment in line with other areas like Lake Lenthall.

The measure received overwhelming support following Fraser Coast Regional Council’s consultation with the local community in August and September 2024.

The advice to introduce the 6-knot speed limit was published in the Queensland Government Gazette (p.188) on 7 February 2025.
