The Wahine Drive boat ramp upgrade on Russell Island is part of this commitment, improving safety, access, and usability for boaties while supporting local tourism and recreational opportunities.

Project overview

Maritime Safety Queensland is leading the delivery of the Wahine Drive boat ramp upgrade, ensuring high-quality marine infrastructure that meets community and industry needs.

Supporting industry and the local Russell Island community, this project will enhance marine safety, improve access, and cater to the growing demand for recreational boating in the region.

Project features

Once complete, the upgraded facility will provide safer launching and retrieval, improved pedestrian access, and more efficient use of the site, particularly during peak periods.

Scope of works

The upgrade works will include:

  • rebuilding and widening the existing two-lane boat ramp and causeway
  • constructing an additional support lane
  • installing a new central floating walkway
  • installing of 10 mooring rings.

Timing of works - effective mid-June 2026

  • Mid-June 2026: Contractor to establish onsite and commence work
  • Mid-September: Works expected to be completed, weather and conditions permitting.

Access during construction

For public safety and contractor efficiency, the Wahine Drive boat ramp will be fully closed during construction.

An alternate launching facility is available at the Jock Kennedy Park boat ramp, located approximately 5.5 kilometres to the north.

Boaties are advised to take extra caution around the site – both landside and in-water – and follow all contractor instructions and temporary signage.
