Lower Daintree River, Cape Tribulation Road floating walkway replacement
Introduction
Maritime Safety Queensland is committed to delivering safe, efficient and resilient boating infrastructure for Queensland communities.
The Lower Daintree River floating walkway replacement project is part of this commitment, restoring a key community boating facility following significant flood damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023.
The project will improve safety, accessibility and reliability for recreational boaters, tourism operators and the local community while providing a more flood-resilient facility for the future.
Project overview
We are leading the delivery to replace the floating walkway, ensuring high-quality marine infrastructure that meets community and industry needs.
The existing floating walkway sustained significant damage during flooding after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper. While temporary repairs were undertaken to restore access, subsequent flooding caused further damage to the structure, highlighting the need for a long-term replacement solution.
The replacement floating walkway has been designed to improve safety, accessibility and resilience in high-flow conditions.
Key features include:
- increasing the width of the floating walkway by one metre, bringing the total width to 3.5 metres
- installation of flood-resistant, environmentally friendly 3D-printed polymer flotation modules designed to improve long-term performance
- installation of two new piles while retaining three existing piles that remain fit for purpose
- the design positions piles within the floating walkway modules, providing dual-sided berthing access
- reconstruction of the boat ramp lane supporting the floating walkway.
Timing of works
- Late August 2026: Contractor to establish onsite and commence construction works.
- December 2026: Project completion, weather and site conditions permitting.
Access during construction
Partial closures of the boat ramp will be required during construction to enable works to be undertaken safely and efficiently.
Boaties are advised to take extra caution around the worksite, both landside and in-water, and follow all contractor instructions and temporary signage.
