Cooktown Pontoon (Charlotte Street)

We’re seeking feedback from the Cooktown community on the proposed design for the Cooktown Pontoon (Charlotte Street), which will provide a dedicated access point for small boats and improve access to the mainland for short trips.

Located on the Endeavour River opposite Lions Park, the pontoon will be positioned close to local shops and amenities, providing convenient access for small boats.

The Queensland Government is committed to improving boating infrastructure to support Cooktown’s vibrant community and growing tourism. This project will deliver a safer, more efficient, and enjoyable experience for all users.

As with all waterways in Far North Queensland, people are encouraged to remain croc-smart when using the Endeavour River and to take care near the water at all times.

Project features

The proposed project will include:

  • A 15-metre-long pontoon
  • Durable aluminium construction for strength and corrosion resistance in marine environments
  • A location closer to shops and supplies, providing more convenient, safer and efficient access for pontoon and boaties.

Why we’re seeking your feedback?

Currently, all boat users, including those taking short trips to the mainland, share the existing boat ramp for access. 

The new pontoon will:

  • Separate Access: Provides a dedicated pontoon specifically for small vessels to board and disembark  
  • Less Congestion: Frees up the boat ramp for launching and retrieving boats only
  • Upgraded Facilities: Increases capacity to support Cooktown’s growing boating community and tourism.

Online community information session

We are hosting an online community information session so you can learn more about the project and ask questions. This session replaces the in-person event that was cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

The feedback we receive during this consultation will be carefully considered to help finalise a design that closely-aligns with community needs and priorities. We’ll share an update on the next steps by mid-2026.
