Maaroom boat ramp upgrade

Project overview

Maritime Safety Queensland is upgrading the Maaroom boat ramp to provide a safer, more reliable facility for local boaties and visitors.

The upgrade will reconstruct and resurface the existing boat ramp, with a longer and steeper design better suited to local conditions and built to current engineering standards.

Once complete, the improved ramp will provide better access across a wider range of tides, making it easier and safer to launch and retrieve vessels.

The project is part of Maritime Safety Queensland's ongoing investment in safe, accessible and reliable marine infrastructure that supports local communities, recreational boating, fishing and tourism across Queensland.

Project features

The upgrade will provide long-term improvements to the boat ramp, including:

  • Raising the upper section of the ramp to reduce sand build-up and lessen the need for maintenance cleaning.
  • Installing 108 precast concrete planks to extend the ramp and improve vessel access across a wider range of tide conditions.
  • Installing a grout mattress at the toe of the ramp to reduce scour and help protect the structure from erosion.
  • Reconstructing and resurfacing the existing facility to improve safety and functionality.
  • Providing a steeper and longer ramp profile better suited to local conditions.

To minimise impacts on users, at least one lane of the boat ramp will remain open throughout construction.

The facility's floating walkway will be temporarily closed from late-July to late-September 2026 while works are undertaken on one side of the ramp.

During this period, alternative floating walkway facilities will be available at:

  • Tuan boat ramp (approximately 13 kilometres south of Maaroom)
  • Poona boat ramp (approximately 17 kilometres south of Maaroom)

Next steps

Timing of works—effective late July 2026

  • Late July: Construction to commence following the winter school holiday period
  • Late September: Floating walkway planned to re-open for use
  • Early October: Overall construction scheduled for completion, weather and site conditions permitting

At least one boat ramp lane will remain open throughout construction.

Maritime Safety Queensland asks all waterway users to exercise caution around the worksite, both on land and in surrounding waters.
