The Whitsunday region is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. It includes the Commonwealth Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Queensland national park and marine park areas.
The area encompasses the Whitsunday Passage, a number of cruise ship anchorages and numerous island passages, bays, beaches and inlets used by both recreational and commercial craft.
