Pollution prevention documents required by ships
The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973 (MARPOL) requires that applicable ships carry certain documentation relating to ship-sourced pollutants. Under the provisions of the Transport Operations (Marine Pollution) Act 1995 (the Act) and the Transport Operations (Marine Pollution) Regulation 2018, Maritime Safety Queensland has imposed additional documentation requirements for some ships operating in Queensland's coastal waters. The MARPOL requirements are also mirrored in the state legislation. Failure to carry the required documentation is an offence under Queensland law.
Documentation requirements are described in:
- Pollution prevention for ships, required documents – specifies the documents to be carried under the provisions of MARPOL, the Act and Regulation.
- Pollution prevention documents, other than MARPOL documents, required for ships in Queensland's coastal waters – provides guidance on further documentation requirements for vessels operating in Queensland's coastal waters.
