Keeping our waterways safe
The Queensland Government is investing $15 million over 3 years in the Keeping Our Waterways Safe program, which commenced on 1 July 2025, to keep Queensland’s waterways clean, safe and accessible for everyone.
Delivered by Maritime Safety Queensland, the program focuses on removing unsafe, derelict and abandoned vessels, strengthening owner responsibility, and enhancing compliance and enforcement across Queensland waterways.
Between July 2018 and December 2025, Queensland waterways saw significant progress in tackling derelict vessels. During this time, a total of 1,924 vessels were removed or resolved, making our rivers, creeks, and coastal areas safer for everyone.
- 1,142 vessels were removed by Maritime Safety Queensland and partner agencies.
- 782 vessels were resolved through other measures.
Across the state, 660 vessels remain under active monitoring, either already derelict or at risk of becoming so. Ongoing efforts continue to ensure these waterways remain safe, navigable, and enjoyable for all Queenslanders.
