Open data

Maritime Safety Queensland has made tide data available for download as part of the Queensland Government's Open Data initiative.

The data is organised into tide stations with each station containing up to 3 types of tide data. Each data type contains the actual data as 1 or more csv files, as well as a description file explaining how the csv files are formatted. There is also additional information about the site such as the tide gauges latitude and longitude. From 2020 the description is included in the downloadable archived interval recording file.

The 3 types of tide data available are, historical, predicted and near real time:

  • Historical or archived data contains a record of the level of water measured at regular 10 minute intervals by an automatic tide gauge.
  • Predicted data is produced by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and is available at 10 minute intervals. The data prior to 2016 was provided at hourly intervals, so this data has been interpolated by Maritime Safety Queensland in order to ensure all the data is at 10 minute intervals.
  • Near real time or live data is the raw, unvalidated tidal height readings made by an automatic tide gauge. These data files are produced by Maritime Safety Queensland software and may contain erroneous data. Furthermore there may be times when the data is unavailable. The files are updated every 10 minutes, however some files contain recordings at every minute.
