Registration
Registration in Queensland is divided into two categories:

Commercial and fishing ship registration
All ships used for activities undertaken for financial reward are considered commercial ventures. This includes ships used where no direct fees are received (for example ships used at resorts).
The following ships must be commercially registered: - ships commercially operating in Queensland waters owned or chartered by a person whose principal place of residence is Queensland
- ships commercially operated by a person whose principal place of business is Queensland
- ships commercially operated by a person whose principal place of business for managing the ships operations is in Queensland.

Recreational ship registration
In Queensland, all recreational ships with an engine of more than 4 hp are required to be registered when on the water.

The Australian Builders Plate is a national initiative that will make boating safer by providing vital information about the capacity and capability of boats. The Australian Builders Plate requires boat builders, importers or competent persons to determine boat-specific information and display it on the plate in a standard format.

Restricted Use Flags
A Restricted Use Flag is a form of temporary registration, issued for a specified period that allows restricted operating rights for ships that would not otherwise be permitted to operate in Queensland waters.

Ship insurance
Legislation requires all ships over 15 m (for example 15.01 m) in length to have insurance sufficient to pay for potential pollution clean up, salvage and wreck removal.
