Types of marine licences

Generally, marine licences are divided into two categories:

  • deck licences which are needed to operate as master and/or mate
  • engineering licences which are needed to operate as chief engineer.

Notes for the guidance of candidates detail the requirements for the marine licences issued by Maritime Safety Queensland. The length of a ship or propulsion power and the operational area are the criteria used to determine the type of marine licence required.

The minimum licence requirements give details of the type of marine licence that is required to operate various ships in a particular operational area. Please note that the tables are applicable only to Queensland. It is suggested that licence holders should check with the local state or territory authorities to determine operating limits for that state or territory.
