Training
Marine training (national training packages) is nationally approved by the Australian National Training Authority and recognised by each state and territory marine authority, such as Maritime Safety Queensland.
National training packages are broken down into units of competency which are recognised towards the issue of a commercial marine licence. These units of competency are generally referred to as the licence profiles.
Licence profiles
You must ensure the courses you undertake are conducted by Maritime Safety Queensland authorised registered training organisations (PDF, 27 KB).
On successful completion of all relevant units from the licence profiles, you will receive a certificate from the registered training organisation. Maritime Safety Queensland accepts these certificates towards the issue of marine licences. However, in the case of Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency, a certificate issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority is also required.
In addition to the certificate issued by a Maritime Safety Queensland authorised registered training organisation, you will be required to meet other prerequisites including a sea service assessment and a medical fitness examination and eyesight test. It is recommended that you have these assessed prior to enrolling in any marine training. More information is outlined in the notes for guidance of candidates.
National training packages
Maritime Safety Queensland recognises certain training (units of competency and certificates) from the Transport and Distribution Maritime national training package.
Maritime Safety Queensland and the training sector have worked together to establish competency-based training and assessment which focuses on obtaining skills in the workplace.
You may be able to apply for certain units through a recognition of prior learning assessment. You will need to make a request to the registered training organisation to apply for recognition of prior learning.
If you complete a workplace-based task book provided by an authorised registered training organisation you will qualify for a 50 per cent remission in the qualifying sea service requirements relative to the licence level. If you complete a Record of Practical Experience and Sea Service (ROPES) book you will qualify for up to a 50 per cent remission in the qualifying sea service requirements relative to the licence level, with a sliding scale of remission for a book that is not 100 per cent complete.
How to become a Maritime Safety Queensland authorised registered training organisation
Maritime Safety Queensland authorises registered training organisations who conduct certain marine training and/or assessment in Queensland. Evidence of this training is then accepted by Maritime Safety Queensland towards the issue of a person's commercial licence.
The training Maritime Safety Queensland accepts is detailed in the licence profiles (PDF, 124 KB). To become authorised by Maritime Safety Queensland, the registered training organisation must make application for the issue of a Certificate of Authority (PDF, 68 KB). The registered training organisation must also make an application for each staff member (PDF, 118 KB) who conducts this authorised marine training, to be accepted by Maritime Safety Queensland.
