Obtaining a marine licence

Before applying for a marine licence, it is necessary to have your sea service assessed to ensure that the amount of sea time you have accrued is relevant to the level of licence that you are applying for.

To apply for a qualifying sea service assessment at a Maritime Safety Queensland regional office:

If the qualifying sea service assessment is successful, you will be eligible to apply for a marine licence. To obtain a marine licence you will need to:

  • complete a marine licence application form
  • provide two recent passport photographs
  • have a medical fitness examination and eyesight test
  • provide a current Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency
  • provide a current Senior First Aid Certificate
  • supply statements of attainment for Occupational Health and Safety at Sea and relevant units of competency under the TDM01 training package or supply a full certificate under the TDM07 training package
  • pass an independent assessment by a Maritime Safety Queensland marine examiner
  • pay the prescribed fee.

If the qualifying service assessment is not successful, you have one year to submit additional service and a new application form. During this time there is no additional fee for submitting extra service. However, if you submit service more than one year after the first assessment, you will be required to pay for a new qualifying sea service assessment.
