Training

Marine training (national training packages) is nationally approved by the Australian National Training Authority andrecognised by each state and territory marine authority, such as Maritime Safety Queensland.

National training packages are broken down into units of competency which are recognised towards the issue of a commercial marine licence. These units of competency are generally referred to as the licence profiles (PDF**, 125KB).

You must ensure the courses you undertake are conducted by Maritime Safety Queensland authorised Registered Training Organisations (PDF**, 37KB).

On successful completion of each unit, you should receive a Statement of Attainment from the Registered Training Organisation. Maritime Safety Queensland accepts these Statements of Attainment towards the issue of marine licences. However, in the case of Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency, a certificate will be issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

National training packages
Maritime Safety Queensland recognises certain training (units of competency) from two national training packages. They are:

Prior to enrolling in any marine training, it is recommended that you have your sea service assessed and undertake medical and eyesight examinations.

You may be able to get exemptions from certain units by a recognition of prior learning  assessment. You will need to make a request to the Registered Training Organisation for any recognition of prior learning exemptions.

How to become a Maritime Safety Queensland authorised Registered Training Organisation
Maritime Safety Queensland authorises Registered Training Organisations who conduct certain marine training and/or assessment in Queensland. Evidence of this training is then accepted by Maritime Safety Queensland towards the issue of a person's commercial licence. The training which Maritime Safety Queensland accepts is detailed in the licence profiles (PDF**, 125KB). To become authorised by Maritime Safety Queensland, the Registered Training Organisation must make application for the issue of a Certificate of Authority (PDF**, 76KB). To obtain further information about the Maritime Safety Queensland authorisation process, please refer to the Regiistered Training Organisation Handbook - How to apply for a Maritime Safety Queensland Certificate of Authority (PDF**, 283KB). The Registered Training Organisation must also make an application for each staff member (PDF**, 86KB)who conducts this authorised marine training, to be accepted by Maritime Safety Queensland.
