Charts
Maritime Safety Queensland publishes a series of nautical navigation charts over selected areas of the Queensland coast. These charts, the boating safety chart series, are aimed at recreational users and commercial operators in Queensland waters.
Many aspects of the charts have been designed for local conditions. Although the charts are suitable for full navigation under the IALA Buoyage System, some of the symbol standards have been modified for use in Queensland. For example, buoy symbols are often shown in the shape and colour of the actual buoy - as you would see it on the water.
Each chart has a comprehensive legend and is published in full colour. Where available, the latest hydrographic surveys are shown on each new edition as well as a comprehensive check on every aid to navigation prior to release. Most charts are printed on both sides including enlargements of boat harbours or the more popular boating areas. Safety information is also shown where possible.
The horizontal datum for all current charts is GDA94 (compatible with WGS84). Set your GPS to this datum and positions from your GPS can be plotted directly on the chart.
To manually update your boating safety chart, you can access Notices to Mariners. The last Notice to Mariners number used in revising that chart is printed on each current chart.
Maritime Safety Queensland has made available, under copyright licence, its paper boating safety charts to electronic charting companies. Such companies have compiled electronic charts or have used information from the paper charts in their navigation or software systems. More information about electronic charts.
