
MSQ headlines - Improving Recreational Boating Safety Discussion Paper
Queenslanders were invited to have their say on further improving boating safety.Maritime Safety Queensland sought public feedback on marine safety issues through the Improving Recreational Boating Safety Discussion Paper. These issues have been identified by the boating public, the marine industry and marine enforcement agencies.
The paper covers a wide range of topical marine safety issues and canvasses public opinion on:
- the compulsory wearing of personal flotation devices during high risk boating activities
- introducing a new category of recreational marine licence for the operators of large recreational vessels
- operating a powered recreational vessel without a licence
- safety requirements for personal watercraft (jetskis) including
- carrying safety equipment
- positioning passengers
- minimum age of unlicensed but accompanied operators
- the safe operation of aging recreational vessels over 15 m and more than 10 years old.
