Capital works program

Maritime Safety Queensland manages and prioritises the allocation of funds to repair, replace or build assets and infrastructure. This infrastructure is primarily related to aids to navigation, however it also includes other asset types including vessels, buildings and storage facilities, and technical assets such as radars and communications equipment.

A prioritised infrastructure program is developed and delivered to facilitate the repair and/or replacement of Maritime Safety Queensland's infrastructure including the provision of new builds. The program is managed, monitored and reviewed based on risk. Often, owing to the scope of works involved, some projects span several financial years.

Maritime Safety Queensland also administers the allocation of capital funds from conservancy to assist primarily in the management of commercial trading ships. The application of conservancy dues (a shipping levy) on commercial vessels in Queensland ports, provides the source of this funding which is channelled into specific and appropriate projects. For example, building the new Townsville Reef Vessel Traffic Service Centre to manage the movement of commercial vessels throughout the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait.

The output of the capital works program provides a contribution to Maritime Safety Queensland's key outcome areas of:

  • safety of vessel movements for example, by managing the replacement of damaged beacons
  • safety of the marine environment for example, by building strategically placed pollution response equipment storage facilities.
