How we make decisions

Community engagement

  • Qualitative research report - expired flares and EPIRBs
Maritime Safety Queensland conducted a focus group to gain insight into behavioural characteristics of boat operators, in order to reduce the number of infringements for expired safety equipment (flares, EPIRB, life jackets), and to better inform the agency of attitudes of boaters towards the use and carriage of safety equipment.

  • Queensland Marine Pollution Research Report 2006
Maritime Safety Queensland conducted an investigation to gain insight into current behaviours of boaties who dispose of rubbish at sea, creating marine pollution. The research was partly funded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

  • Recreational boating surveys
Maritime Safety Queensland conducts regular surveys to gain insights on patterns of boat ownership and use, safety equipment use, and community knowledge of maritime safety and marine pollution issues on Queensland's waterways. Reports discuss the results of the survey, and where relevant, provides comparison with previous recreational boating surveys undertaken.
