Look out for debris during river release
Boaties operating on the Brisbane River should keep an eye out for partially submerged debris in the coming week, warned Maritime Safety Queensland General Manager, Patrick Quirk.
“SEQ Water will begin a controlled release from Wivenhoe Dam into the Brisbane River from midday Friday 18 November for about one week,” Mr Quirk said.
“SEQ Water expects the release rate will have no impact on Colleges Crossing and minimal impact on water levels in the Brisbane River below Moggill."
“However there is always the possibility that increased flow rates could dislodge some of this material, presenting a hazard to navigation. Boaties should keep an eye out for any changed conditions.”
“Last year’s floods washed large amounts of debris into the river and much of this material remains submerged in debris fields along various stretches.”
“These fields are now marked on charts with Notices to Mariners and also feature in the newly-released edition 9 of the Beacon to Beacon Directory.”
“My advice to anyone operating a vessel on the river is to familiarise themselves with the changed environment, reduce your speed and keep a proper lookout at all times.”
“By sticking to the centre of the river channel, boaties can avoid the vast majority of the debris areas.”
“Owners of vessels moored in the Brisbane River are also encouraged to check that their vessels are appropriately secured prior to the storm season.”
Beacon to Beacon Edition 9 contains extended coverage from Gladstone up to Yeppoon and chartlets of marine park green zones.
