Preparing for extreme weather

Queensland’s last summer of disastrous cyclone, flood and storms has highlighted the need for greater vigilance and awareness of the threat to recreational and commercial boating.

Maritime Safety Queensland has revised its contingency plans for cyclones and extreme weather to ensure the maritime community is more resilient and better prepared for any return of these conditions.

In addition to updating cyclone contingency plans for ports in the state’s far north, extreme weather event contingency plans are now available for boaties in the state’s south east including Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

The plans aim to improve our readiness for a range of adverse weather events from summer storms to river flooding and cyclones.

Even experienced mariners are encouraged to read and familiarise themselves with the plans and requirements for their region. The contingency plan requires mariners to think about their own planning and to be ready to enact this plan when it’s required.

The protection against extreme weather is to plan for such events.
