MSQ ready for duck race river round up

Maritime Safety Queensland’s pollution response crews will be out on the Brisbane River this weekend – not responding to an oil spill but to a plastic duck deluge.

The Great Brisbane Duck Race and Team Duck Race Challenge are the signature fundraising events of the PA Research Foundation in aid of cancer research.

When this year’s great duck race hits the water this Sunday, the pollution response team will be ready and waiting to intercept a mini flotilla of hundreds bright yellow plastic ducks.

“We’ve got a boom set up to prevent any ducks escaping and two oil skimmer boats to collect them at the end of the 100 metre course,” said Brisbane's regional harbour master Richard Johnson.

“It’s good fun and for a very worthy cause but the event also provides some extra training for the response crews.”

“The public has a chance to see our state of the art equipment in action without the drama of an actual incident.

“But the response crews are always serious about their work and protecting the environment.”

“They’ll be planning to round up every duck – if they’re not collected by the skimmers we’ll have back-up vessels patrolling the shoreline for any strays.”
