Coal carrier being closely monitored by maritime authorities
A Liberian registered bulk carrier Newlead Venetico has been detained by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) following the discovery of cracks in its hull.
Maritime Safety Queensland said AMSA had directed the ship to remain anchored offshore from the coal terminals at the Port of Hay Point.
Temporary repairs have been made and there is currently no immediate threat or risk to the crew, ship or environment.
Newlead Venetico is loaded with 67 000 tonnes of coal which is just over half the coal it was programmed to load for export to China.
The vessel is under the direction of Federal maritime authorities, who are liaising with Maritime Safety Queensland to ensure the vessel is seaworthy prior to any future decisions on its movements.
Further updates are expected from Federal authorities tomorrow.
Enquiries should be directed to AMSA.
