Recreational boating facilities demand forecasting study
The popularity of recreational boating in Queensland continues to increase as the state’s population grows. The number of boaties using the state’s public boating facilities has increased the demand for new and improved boating facilities. Maritime Safety Queensland, in partnership with local managing authorities (local government and port authorities), is responsible for the provision of recreational boating facilities throughout the state. More information about boating infrastucture and waterways management.
In 2010–11 Maritime Safety Queensland undertook a state-wide recreational boating facilities demand forecasting study. The study involved extensive consultation, data collection, demographic trend analysis, needs analysis, and demand forecasting for the future. In assessing future demand, consideration was given to facility location, environmental constraints and opportunities, seasonal and holiday demand fluctuations and the nature of recreational boating in the area.
The study is intended to be used by the delivery agencies (local governments, port authorities and the Department of Transport and Main Roads) as one tool in a broader assessment process to choose and prioritise sites for development.
The outcomes of the study will provide a basis to guide investment of funding in boating infrastructure from 2012–13 onwards.
Study finalisation
In September 2011 Maritime Safety Queensland received the final study reports from the consultant GHD. The reports are currently with government for consideration. An executive summary will be available on the website soon.
