Grounded ship refloated near Thursday Island
An 80 metre general cargo vessel which ran aground near Thursday Island in the state’s far north early yesterday has been refloated.
The Trinity Bay hit a sand bar near the Red Island Point Jetty off Bamaga, Cape York about 3 am Monday.
The Trinity Bay’s owners transferred cargo and fuel to a standby vessel to lighten the grounded ship which was refloated about 8.40 last night.
The ship is now alongside the wharf at Seisia near Bamaga.
Maritime Safety Queensland has advised the owners the vessel will need to be inspected before being permitted to proceed.
Initial reports suggested the ship had suffered no damage.
Pollution control equipment was transferred from Thursday Island by barge as a precautionary measure.
Maritime Safety Queensland has started an investigation.
