Establishment Board of Inquiry project
In March 2007, the Honourable Paul Lucas, MP, announced that a Board of Inquiry would be held into the marine incident involving the vessel Wunma in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
At the conclusion of its inquiry, the Board presented the then Minister for Transport, Trade and Industrial Relations, the Honourable John Mickel, MP, with a comprehensive report into the circumstances surrounding the incident including the Board's findings.
The Board made recommendations to a number of parties to ensure the safe operation of the ship Wunma and also to ensure that similar marine incidents do not occur. Recommendations were made to the owner of the ship, the operator of the ship and Maritime Safety Queensland. Maritime Safety Queensland established a project to oversee the implementation of the recommendations of the Wunma Board of Inquiry.
The recommendations have been mainly complied with by the owner and operator, particularly in relation to the Wunma being able to be made secure during a cyclone weather event. Further, the recommendation directed towards Maritime Safety Queensland, involving a review of Maritime Safety Queensland's approach to regulation, has been actively implemented and is close to completion.
